Atlas notes

Every current steel Submariner has a date window except one. This is that one, and Rolex sells it as the purer take on a shape you have already seen ten thousand times: no cyclops lens over the 3 o’clock, no date wheel to throw the symmetry off, just the bezel, the dial and the bracelet doing the entire job.

The case is 41mm Oystersteel with a monobloc middle and the Triplock crown, and the bezel carries a black Cerachrom insert that will not scratch or fade the way the old aluminum ones eventually did. Water resistance is 300 meters, the figure Rolex publishes for this reference. Inside is Rolex’s own Calibre 3230: a Chronergy-escapement automatic running 70 hours, regulated as a Superlative Chronometer to -2/+2 seconds a day after casing, tighter than the COSC standard most Swiss watches settle for. Rolex does not publish a case thickness or lug-to-lug figure for this reference in the material I can verify, so I am leaving both blank rather than borrowing a forum measurement and calling it a spec.

The number that actually matters is the price, and it comes in two versions. Rolex’s own retail price is $10,050. The secondary market says $11,500 to $14,500, because most buyers cannot walk into a boutique and simply buy this watch. That gap is the real spec sheet entry nobody prints. If you can buy at retail, the value argument is easy. If you can’t, you are paying a scarcity tax on top of an already expensive watch, and that tax is worth weighing against a Tudor Black Bay 58, which shares a parent company and a manufacture movement for roughly a third of the money.

I would still call this a solid buy at retail. The movement and bracelet earn their reputation without needing the brand name to do the work, and a steel Submariner is about the safest resale bet in the hobby, which is a real part of what the money buys. The honest question is not the watch. It’s the wait: whether that’s the point of buying a Submariner right now, or the obstacle to it, because at the moment it is both.
