Atlas notes

Seiko discontinued the SKX007 in 2019 and spent the rest of that year selling everyone its replacement. The SRPD55 keeps the shape people actually loved: a 42.5mm case, guarded crown, a black dial under a black bezel. What it adds is a day and date window at three o’clock, and the case grew half a millimeter to make room for it.

Inside is the 4R36, Seiko’s long serving workhorse automatic. It hacks and it hand winds, courtesies a sub $350 watch has no real obligation to include. Seiko’s own caliber instruction manual rates the movement at plus 45 to minus 35 seconds a day, a wide band by mechanical standards, and states it plainly rather than burying it. Forty one hours of reserve carries a weekend off the wrist and not a lot further. Water resistance is 100 meters at 10 bar, under Hardlex rather than sapphire.

Here is the honest gap. Seiko never calls the SRPD55 a Diver’s watch on its own product page, despite borrowing the bezel and case shape wholesale from one. The Citizen NY0086 sells in the same street price band and actually clears ISO 6425, the real certification with the real testing regime behind it. If a certified dive rating is the point, that is the better watch. If the point is the shape, the day window, and a movement you can wind by hand on a Monday morning, the Seiko wins the argument, usually for less money than the Citizen asks.

The forums still call this the SKX successor, and mostly mean it as a compliment. It earned that reputation honestly: a day window the SKX never had, at a lower launch price than the SKX ever carried. For a first automatic, or a watch you do not plan to baby, I would take the trade.
