Prospex Monster SRPD27
the "Monster" on a budget
A shrouded 42.4mm case and a real 200m rating, but a 41-hour 4R36 and Hardlex glass mean the Monster only makes sense at the bottom of its price band.

The Monster is the Seiko that diver people argue about when they run out of other things to argue about, and the SRPD27 is the current argument. It keeps the shrouded, dimpled case that gave the line its name and asks a modest price for it.
The numbers, from Seiko’s page for the sibling SRPE27, which carries the same platform: 42.4mm across, 13.4mm thick, 200 meters, the real diver’s rating. Inside is the 4R36 with about 41 hours in reserve. I could not open a Seiko page for the SRPD27 itself, so I cannot point you to a maker page for this exact reference, and I will not pretend otherwise. Lug to lug and lug width are not published for this reference in the sources I could verify, so check before you buy a strap.
Two things hold it back. The crystal is Hardlex, a treated mineral glass, and at the top of its street range, around $459, you are paying for a scratch-prone front. And 13.4mm at 42.4mm is a stout watch for smaller wrists, and the lug to lug figure that would settle it is the one Seiko leaves out. Watchoutz lists the strap as black silicone, which is fine, but Seiko’s own page I could open does not confirm it.
My view: this is a good buy only when it sells near the low end of the band. At about $396, the sale price one US retailer showed (sold out when I looked), it is a bold, honest tool. At the $459 Watchoutz asks, and well above that at the $495 it launched at in 2019, you are paying a lot for Hardlex and a 41-hour reserve, and I would look hard at the NY0086 first.
- Seiko: Prospex SRPE27 product page (sibling reference) · We could not open a Seiko page for the SRPD27 itself, so this is the sibling SRPE27 page. It publishes the same figures: 42.4 mm diameter, 13.4 mm thickness, Caliber 4R36, approx. 41 hours, 200m diver's, Hardlex with magnified glass. Treat these as the platform's published numbers rather than a statement about the SRPD27 page itself. We did not use its lug distance figure, because no SRPD27 source confirms it.
- Watchoutz: Seiko Prospex SRPD27 listing · Retailer listing for the SRPD27 itself at $459.00 USD, supporting the top of the priceBand. Also lists 42.4 mm, 13.4 mm, Hardlex, 4R36 with approx. 41 hours, 200 m and a black silicone strap. Does not state lug width.
- Right Time: Seiko Prospex SRPD27 listing · US retailer page for the SRPD27 showing a $396.00 sale price against a $495.00 regular price, supporting the low end of the priceBand. The page showed the watch as sold out when we fetched it. It lists 4R36, 200 m and mineral glass with date magnifier, and does not state lug width.
- Gear Patrol: Seiko's Monster is back (SRPD25 and SRPD27) · 2019 launch coverage giving $495 for the SRPD27 on the Prospex silicone strap, as launch context only. Not used to set the priceBand, which reflects current retailer prices.
