Pagani Design has built a whole catalogue out of borrowing silhouettes nobody will sell you cheaply, and the PD-1752 is its go at the bracelet watch that made “president” a style of its own. Steel case, steel bracelet with polished center links, day complication, sold direct for $161.49. No version of this watch costs four figures, which is rather the point.
The case runs 36mm across and 14mm thick, cut from 316L stainless steel with a screw-down crown, and Pagani Design’s own spec sheet puts sapphire over the dial rather than the mineral glass a watch at this price usually gets. Water resistance is rated to 330 feet, roughly 100 meters: fine for a shower and a swim, not a number this brand or anyone else calls diver rated. Inside is a Seagull ST16, stated to run 40 hours off the wrist. Pagani Design does not claim it hacks or hand-winds, and I am not going to claim it either. Lug to lug and clasp type go unpublished, same as the brand’s other homages.
That 14mm thickness is the number I keep coming back to. On a 36mm case, a thickness running close to 40 percent of the width reads top-heavy on a wrist that a dress watch this size is supposed to flatter, and a hidden, unspecified clasp on a bracelet whose whole reputation rests on a concealed clasp is an odd thing for Pagani Design to leave undocumented. Those are the costs. What you get back is a lot of watch per dollar: a steel bracelet included rather than sold separately, sapphire instead of mineral, an automatic movement instead of quartz, all for less than a tank of gas a month.
If the ethics of the homage don’t bother you, this is a reasonable way into the shape for $161.49. If they do, or if you’d rather have a watch with its own name on the dial, the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 gets you there in steel for five to eight hundred dollars more, and Orient’s Bambino 38 does the honest dress-automatic job for roughly twenty to a hundred dollars more than the Pagani without pretending to be anything but itself.
