Atlas notes

If you have ever wanted a Turtle and flinched at the price of the sapphire ones, this is the one Seiko sells you instead. It is a big, round-shouldered 200m automatic diver, and the case is the point: 45.0mm across and 13.4mm thick, per Seiko’s own page, on a 22mm silicone strap.

Inside is the 4R36, an automatic that also winds by hand and has a stop-second function. It runs for approximately 41 hours, which is a Friday-evening-to-Sunday-night watch rather than a Monday one. Seiko lists the water resistance as 200m, diver’s, with a screw-down crown and screw case back, and that is the part I would not worry about. The crystal is Hardlex, Seiko’s own hardened mineral. It is not sapphire, and at a US list price of $525 that is the trade the whole watch is built on.

Here is the problem. Seiko does not publish a lug-to-lug figure, so you cannot measure this against your wrist from the spec sheet, and 45mm on a case this thick is a lot of watch. If your wrist is under about 7 inches, try one on before you buy. I would rather say that plainly than call it a statement piece.

The Citizen NY0086 is the obvious rival: 42mm, mineral crystal, 200m and ISO-compliant, in a band that starts below this one. The Seiko has to win on the hand-winding movement and the Turtle shape alone. Dealer prices run well under list, and at that level it is a fair, slightly flawed diver. If a 45mm case sounds right, buy it. If it sounds like a gamble, the SPB143 is the same idea cut for ordinary wrists, for more money.
