Freediver
the microbrand diver with the better clasp
Traska's seventh-generation Freediver: a 40.5mm 316L case, box sapphire, and a six-position micro-adjust clasp the $1,100 Seiko SPB143 lacks, for $685-735.

Traska sells directly to the buyer, with no distributor markup in between, and has spent seven generations sanding down one idea: a 1960s dive watch built the way a small, obsessive team would build it if nobody was telling them to cut corners. The current Freediver is Ref. 1187, the seventh pass at that idea since the watch launched the company in 2018.
The case runs 40.5mm across and 48mm lug to lug, thin enough at 11.9mm that the double-domed box sapphire barely adds bulk over the 10.5mm case underneath it. A Miyota 9015 drives the date version, a 9039 the no-date, both hacking and hand-winding at 28,800 beats an hour and regulated in four positions before they ship. Water resistance is 200 meters, and the ceramic bezel insert wears Swiss BGW9 lume that Traska says runs 52% brighter after ten hours in the dark than the version it replaced.
Here is the detail that actually earns attention: a tool-less clasp with six micro-adjust positions, on a $735 watch, when Seiko still ships its $1,100-plus SPB143 with none at all. I think that is the whole pitch in one component. Drilled lugs, solid end links, and quick-release spring bars round out a bracelet that costs less to own and does more for you day to day.
What you give up for the discount is durability of reputation rather than durability of parts. Traska sells direct, with no dealer network and no decade of secondhand pricing data to lean on, and the 42-hour reserve will not outlast a long weekend off the wrist the way a 6R35’s 70 hours will. Four of the five current colorways run $735; Mint Green undercuts the rest at $685, for reasons Traska does not spell out. Neither gap is large enough to change the recommendation.
