Atlas notes

The Dirty Dozen pattern is a plain wartime field watch, and the usual argument about it is whether a reissue should dare to add anything. Baltany adds a date window and a sunburst dial, which will annoy purists and please people who want to know what day it is. At $149 for a sapphire, 100m automatic, I know which camp the price favours.

Baltany’s product page lists a 39mm brushed 316L case, AR-coated sapphire, Super-LumiNova, and a Seagull ST1731 with date and small seconds. The small seconds is the interesting part, since it gives the dial a bit of character a centre seconds hand lacks. The strap is leather, black or dark brown to match the dial, on a 20mm lug width.

Now the cost. The case is 12mm thick and 46mm lug to lug, which is a long reach for a 39mm watch, so check your wrist before you trust the diameter. The page also gives no power reserve and says nothing about hacking or hand-winding, so I cannot tell you whether the ST1731 behaves like a modern workhorse. It gives no launch date either. I will not guess on a movement I cannot verify.

My view: a good-looking, honestly priced field watch for someone who will read the numbers first. If you want certainty about what is inside, the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical costs three or four times as much and publishes far more. If you just want the look for the price of dinner, this is the way to get it.

The page does not state power reserve, frequency, hacking, hand-winding, warranty or a launch date. Only the list price was checked; no dealer street price was verified, so the upper end of the band is an allowance.
